Megan's 1st Dentist Appointment

09.08.2010

At Andrew's first dentist appointment, the hygienist suggested I bring Megan in for a checkup as well.  The office participates in a program known as BOHP (Baby Oral Health Program) and all children under 14 months old are given a free dental health exam.  Megan was pushing 14 months, so I needed to get her in soon.

So before I left the office with Andrew, I made an appointment for Megan the following week.  She could not have been a better patient.  She loved having her teeth and gums massaged.  And she was given a new toothbrush, too!  Her teeth looked great but there was a slight concern with her upper frenulum.  What's that, you ask?  Well, you know how some kids are tongue-tied and have to have "something" clipped to improve their speech?  Well, that something is their lower frenulum.  Megan's upper frenulum, which basically attaches her lip to her gums, is a little too thick.  This is something that will have to be clipped as she gets older as it could cause a gap between her two front teeth.  The hygienist, however, said a lot of kids end up with an injury that will basically "bust" the frenulum and that would actually be the best thing for her because clipping it when she's older will be painful.  She said for me not to stress if she busts it (!), but to expect a lot of blood because the frenulum is full of capillaries.  Goody.  Now I'm supposed to hope Megan falls and busts her lip?  Yeah, that sounds like something I want to do...

Megan's trip to the dentist was completed with her very own balloon and no visit from Elmo.  Seems Elmo is a little scary for kids her age. :)
